The True Araucana - Poultry

I've never created a Blog before so this may get interesting.   I thought I'd just pick something I liked talking about (and I can be a bit long winded).  Nothing heavy or world changing,  just some ramblings.   I see this spot as good a spot as any to vent.

The "True" Araucana, as I like to call them, is a poultry breed.   It's a rare breed with the unusual characteristics of "Rumpless-ness" and Tufts.   They lay green to blue eggs, blue being preferred.   Because of a few similarities, the Easter Egger and Ameraucana and Araucana are often mislabeled and confused with one another.

There is plenty of information online to educate breeders and chicken owners but even Hatcheries get it wrong!   That annoys me.  It annoys me for several reasons.  Number one is that a Hatchery should know better.........and they do.   When I first started raising the Araucana, it would ruffle my feathers really bad to see a Hatchery selling "Araucana's" then having a photo of an Easter Egger on the ad.    I started a campaign on my own to educate any hatchery that would listen.    What I found was 1.  They know the difference  2.  They don't care as long as they sell.   3.  Their general excuse was that they had advertised them for so long this way they were not going to put out the money to change the ads because  #2 They don't care!

I am no poultry expert but I had always looked up to hatcheries as a place to buy chicks and a place where you can learn about all of the poultry breeds.   I'll leave the venting about hatchery's at that but I wanted to express my feelings about this because of the difficult time I had trying to find "True" Araucana's for sale locally and online.   99.9% of the time the ads online for Araucana's for Sale were Easter Eggers.   I gave up trying to share information with sellers that would tell me outright I didn't know what I was talking about, the "hatchery" said they are Araucana's!  OMG.....I am pretty hard headed and finally gave up sharing poultry Club websites to educate.  It didn't do any good anyway.

BUT, since you are reading this you might be interested to know the differences in these 3 interesting poultry breeds and rather than make this longer than it already is, here are websites for each breed.  Click on the links below to open them in a new window to compare the breeds

You can't really get any more clear than this can you?  Seriously
I have had both Ameraucana's and Easter Eggers but prefer my Araucana's.   I "still" find websites with incorrect information about what an Araucana is.  FOR GOSH SAKES, wouldn't you expect to find a rare breed conservancy and a University to get it correct?????

The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy had information about the breed there and photo's of the UK version which looks more like the Ameraucana or an Easter Egger!  And their link to the photo came from the Univeristy of Oklahoma!  It's No Wonder that so many people will argue that what they have are Araucana's and not Easter Eggers.   Trusted sites show them photo's that are "WRONG".   I said I give up but I don't or I wouldn't be writing this at midnight....I need to head to bed, I have an early day in OR Recovery in the morning.  I guess this is what is called Venting......thanks for indulging me this.  I do have to say that the ALBC finally did remove the link to the Oklahoma University website where the photo was linked to.  The University never did return any of my calls or emails to correct their error.

I'll be back with more, more photo's and information about this cool, unique poultry breed.
